John Barleycorn

The Harvest God celebrated through the harvest sabbats has long been embodied in
musical tradition of the British Isles as the figure of "John Barleycorn".
Numerous songs have been written that celebrate the sacrifice that
the Harvest God makes by providing his life to the grain, only to rise to life
once again, resurrected. While these songs celebrate one of the very fine products
of the grain, ale, many don't realize that these songs act out this
resurrection cycle from it's Pagan roots. Beer, ale and other fermented grain
beverages were often included in the feasts of these celebrations.
In America, the image of the word "corn" is generally associated with the
grain "maize". However, corn is actually the term for any of the cereal grains:
wheat, oats, barley, maize, etc. Thus the name, "Barleycorn".
